food & drink

From John 6 – after the miraculous feeding of the 5000:

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” (51)

“I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For My flesh is real food and My blood is real drink. Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in them. Just like the living Father sent Me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on Me will live because of Me.” (53-58)

“Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on Him God the Father has placed His seal of approval.” (27)

“For My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” (40)

From John 4 – the Samaritan woman:

“The Samaritan woman said to Him, ‘You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman, how can You ask me for a drink?’ Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the Gift of God and Who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.’ The woman said, ‘Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?’” (9-11)

“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’” (13-14)

“The woman said, ‘I know that Messiah is coming. When He comes, He will explain everything to us.’ Then Jesus declared, ‘I, the One speaking to you – I am He.’” (25-26)

“Just then His disciples returned and were surprised to see Him talking with a woman.” (27)

“The disciples urged Him, ‘Rabbi, eat something.’ But He said to them, ‘I have food to eat that you know nothing about.’ Then the disciples said to each other, ‘Could someone have brought Him food?’ ‘My food,’ said Jesus, ‘is to do the will of the Father who sent Me and to finish His work.’” (31-34)

From John 17 – the prayer of Jesus:

“Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son may glorify You. For You granted Him authority over all people that He might give eternal life to all those You have given Him. Now this is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I have brought You glory on earth by finishing the work You gave me to do.” (1-4)

A few conclusions:

  • Jesus knows Himself
  • Jesus knows people
  • Jesus knows that people need ‘real food’ and ‘real drink’
  • Jesus is ‘food that endures to eternal life’
  • Eternal life is knowing the Father and Son
  • Jesus’ pleasure while on Earth was to do the will of the Father
  • The will of the Father is that we have eternal life

“Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty.’” John 6:35
